The Academy Awards were delayed by the pandemic and are now scheduled to take place on Sunday, April 25.
Irish animation Wolfwalkers has earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Short Film.
Kilkenny animation studio Cartoon Saloon, who helmed the critically-acclaimed movie, is following the success of its previously Oscar nominated flicks The Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea.
The Golden Globe and BAFTA-nominated Wolfwalkers follows Robyn Goodfellowe (English actress Honor Kneasfy), a young apprentice hunter who journeys to Ireland with her father in a time of superstition and magic to wipe out the last wolf pack. Her parent also happens to work for Oliver Cromwell - one of the most vilified characters in Irish history.
While exploring the forbidden lands outside the city walls, she befriends a free-spirited girl, Mebh (Irish newcomer Eva Whittaker), a member of a mysterious tribe rumoured to have the ability to transform into wolves by night.
Directed by Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart, Apple+ TV's Wolfwalkers will compete against Onward, Over the Moon, Soul and A Shaun The Sheep Movie: Farmageddon in the Best Animated Short Film category.
