The Irish nominations include successful films 'Sing Street' and 'The Lobster'.
Following the release of the full list nomination for 2017 Golden Globe Award this morning, Chief Executive of Irish Film Board, James Hickey said:
"Congratulations to all the Irish Golden Globe nominees announced today, recognized amongst the best in the world in their craft. 'Sing Street' and 'The Lobster' are supported by the IFB and we are very proud of the teams behind each film".
The full list for the 74th edition has been announced this morning live on NBC.
The film 'Sing Street' leads the Irish contingent for the award, receiving a nomination for Best Motion Picture - Comedy/Musical. Among this year's nominations were Irish stars, Ruth Negga for Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama, Colin Farrell for Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Comedy/Musical and Catriona Balfe for Best Actress in a TV Series - Drama.
"Colin Farrell gives a mesmerising performance in the 'The Lobster', a film which has brought images of Kerry around the world. I'm also delighted to see Ruth Negga receive worldwide success with her performance in 'Loving' having begun her career on Irish projects including numerous IFB-funded films and Catriona Balfe for her performance in 'Outlander'", Hickey continues.
John Carney's 'Sing Street' takes us back to a 1980s Dublin where the recession forces 14-year-old Cosmo out of his comfortable private school and into survival mode at the inner-city public school where the kids are rough and the teachers are rougher. He turns to music and forms a ragtag band, shooting scrappy music videos, and finding refuge and love with the beautiful 16-year-old Raphina.
The film was funded by IFB and will compete against movies such as 'La La Land', 'Florence Foster Jenkins' and 'Deadpool' for the Best Motion Picture -Comedy/Musical award.
Catriona Balfe for TV series 'Outlander' will compete against stars such as Winona Ryder and Claire Foy for the prestigious accolade.
Ruth Negga will compete against huge names like Amy Adams and Natalie Portman for Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama for her nod in Jeff Nichols’s 'Loving' that tells the true story of an interracial marriage in the segregated US South of the 1950s. Her nomination comes after it was revealed that she will be honoured with the Rising Star Award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival in January.
Colin Farrell’s nomination for Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Comedy/Musical comes for his performance in 'The Lobster'. The film was IFB-funded and shot in Co Kerry. This is Colin's second Golden Globe nomination, having won the same award in 2009 for 'In Bruges'.
The Golden Globe Awards will air live on NBC on Sunday, January 8 at 5-8 p.m.
