The final episode of Sherlock’s fourth season will be shown in cinemas across the UK and Ireland – but only for one night.
It has been a long time… Sherlock fans were waiting for the return of the BBC crime-drama, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, since the last season in 2014. Now, after a special episode on New Year’s Day 2016, the fans will get what they wanted all along: 3 new episodes of Sherlock and Watson investigating in present day London.
After announcing the titles of the first two episodes of season 4, The Six Thatchers and The Lying Detective, BBC has also confirmed the final episode of the upcoming season to be named The Final Problem. And although there have been no further details about the content of the episode released yet, BBC promised “laughter, shocks and surprise.”
Good news: Sherlock fans will be able to see this third episode in selected Odeon, Cineworld, Picture House, Vue, Empire, Omniplex, Showcase and Everyman cinemas in the UK and Ireland. It will be screened for one night only at 9 pm on January 15, while BBC One will broadcast The Final Problem at the same time. Recently, it has been announced that additional exclusive content will be shown during the special cinema screenings only, with about 300 venues set to participate.
Last year’s screening of the Sherlock special The Abominable Bride has been a huge success which lead to the decision to also bring The Final Problem to the cinemas, the show’s producer Sue Vertue revealed.

“Fans clearly enjoyed the opportunity of watching The Abominable Bride in cinemas last time, so Hartswood Films are thrilled to be working with BBC Worldwide again to do the same for this series 4 finale.”
BBC’s adaption of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s hugely-popular detective series first aired on July 25, 2010 and ever since fans was waiting for Sherlock’s return to the screens.
The title of the new episode now makes the Sherlock fandom worry that the fourth season will be Cumberbatch’s and Freeman’s last return to 221B Baker Street. While Benedict Cumberbatch and others in the cast already hinted that The Final Problem may mark “the end of an era”, the show has yet to make an official announcement regarding the future of the program.
