"I actually don’t think style has anything to do with fashion. It’s really about wearing whatever you feel like and having the balls to do it"
How would you describe your style? I usually just put on whatever’s beside the bed. But for the Mudbug Club we wear suits and I enjoy that – we look just like we’re going to a gypsy’s funeral. I think musicians in suits look the bee's knees, really. And I like a lot of the ’40s clothes – French ’40s suits. I think people should look at the whole history of clothing and take from that, not just from what’s happening now. I especially think there was style in the ’40s.
I actually don’t think style has anything to do with fashion, though. It’s really about wearing whatever you feel like and having the balls to do it. What’s good to see at the moment, what seems to be creeping back, is that people are dressing more individually.
I love that movie Brazil. It’s set in the future but has 1940s designs. I kind of like that idea of a future where we all go forward and backward at the same time.
Is image important to your music? I think the two do go hand in hand. For example the Mudbug Club are somewhere between a wedding band from hell and some kind of funeral band. We don’t discuss our image though – there’s no democracy at all – I tell everyone to dress like they’re going to a funeral.
Where do you shop? Secondhand stores. If you look around that’s where you find really individual and well-tailored stuff. Harlequin is a really good one on the back of George's Street Arcade. And there are some great designers if you’ve got the money. I can’t wait to sign a contract with Paul Smith so that he designs all my clothes!

Your most cherished piece of clothing or accessory? I have an old brown suit which I think is done-for now. But it’s got a lovely cut. Again it’s individual and it’s been around since, or certainly taken inspiration from, the ’30s or ’40s. A pair of Michael Collins-style motorcycle boots as well – I got them at a car boot sale.
Who is the most stylish musician in the world, living or dead? Dean Martin – he was the coolest. Deano would kind of throw parties and go to bed and play a round of golf early in the morning – I like his style.
