Actor Jim Carrey has issued a call for people to challenge Facebook over its anti-social profiteering.
Facebook has been forced to reveal that as many as 126 million people saw ads paid for by Russian organisations in an effort to influence the Trump vs Clinton presidential race.
Many feel that this is likely to have tipped the election in favour of the Republican candidate – in effect undermining the democratic process in a way that suits Russian interests.
“I encourage all other investors who care about our future to do the same #unfriendfacebook,” he wrote.
He added: "I’m dumping my @facebook stock and deleting my page because @facebook profited from Russian interference in our elections and they’re still not doing enough to stop it. I encourage all other investors who care about our future to do the same. #unfriendfacebook."
In an interview with CNBC, Jim Carey added “(We) must encourage more oversight by the owners of these social media platforms.
“This easy access has to be more responsibly handled. What we need now are activist investors to send a message that responsible oversight is needed. What the world needs now is capitalism with a conscience.”
