Johnny Depp Opens Up About Depression
The 55-year-old Hollywood star has revealed that he endured a bout of acute depression as his marriage fell apart and he simultaneously faced harsh financial woes.
Depp's marriage to Amber Heard fell apart amid allegations of domestic violence. While the Hollywood star is suing his financial management company for allegedly causing him to go into debt. But they're countersued him with claims that Depp suffered from a "compulsive spending disorder", and that they tried to help him.
"I was as low as I believe I could have gotten. The next step was, 'You're going to arrive somewhere with your eyes open and you're going to leave there with your eyes closed.' I couldn't take the pain every day," he told Rolling Stone magazine.
Depp says that during this emotionally turbulent time he sat down to write his thoughts in a memoir but found himself crying uncontrollably as he tried to make sense of it all.
"I poured myself a vodka in the morning and started writing until the tears filled my eyes and I couldn't see the page anymore," he explained to Rolling Stone.
The magazine reports that he wiped tears away as he revealed all this.
"I kept trying to figure out what I'd done to deserve this. I'd tried being kind to everyone, helping everyone, being truthful to everyone. The truth is most important to me. And all this still happened."
Depp also discussed rumours about his lavish spending habits. It was claimed he was spending a staggering $30k a month alone on wine.
But he's now dismissed this. "It's insulting to say that I spent $30,000 on wine. Because it was far more," he tells Rolling Stone, giving them an estimate of $50k.
It was also rumoured that he spent a whopping $3m on shooting Hunter S Thompson's ashes into space. Again, he claims the real figure was much higher.
"It was $5 million," he claims.
It's being reported that Depp conducted this interview over 72 hours while drinking and smoking hash.
