According to initial tabloid reports, the Cork actor had a "meltdown" on a flight from Miami to LA after he was involved in a "boozy" verbal altercation with another passenger, subsequently reported as being his wife.
Jonathan was then ordered by a flight attendant to stop smoking an e-cigarette.
During the bust up, Jonathan allegedly launched into an angry tirade that, according to an eye witness, was "laced with profanities", which upset other passengers.
Jonathan Rhys Meyers was detained by police at LAX airport on Sunday night but later released without any charges. In the past, the actor had been involved in drunken episodes at airports in Dublin, Paris and New York.
Now Jonathan Rhys Meyers' wife Mara Lane has taken to social media to tell their side of the story. She insists that "there was no argument" between them on the flight and that she had asked him not to smoke his e-cig.
"There was no argument, just me asking him to not use his e cig per stewardess’ request to me and him not being himself, speaking very very unkindly," she stated.
She also opened up about how they'd been in South America where Jonathan was seeking help for alcoholism and anger management issues.
"8 months of sobriety and an unfortunate day of airline travel. We were in South America specifically working holistically through anger issues that result in these kinds of episodes," she explained.
She also revealed that when "when in it... he is not in a frame of mind where he can really even comprehend the repercussions and necessary response to his own actions."
She went on to apologize for the accident. "J IS extremely sorry for any inconveniences caused to anyone traveling yesterday. It was out of his character. It was unbeknownst to me anything that happened on flight, as I was with my son with a privacy wall up. We are home safe and he is feeling deeply sorry for any remote disrespect afforded to me, attendants, onlookers or officers. Thank you for your compassion on this ongoing battle with addiction we are in."
