The Irish indie singer songwriter Kevin Herm Connolly has recorded a very different version of the classic song by The Beatles – with the help of his father
Yesterday is one of those songs that everybody – well, almost everybody – knows. Written by Paul McCartney, it notoriously began life as Scrambled Eggs, before one half of the Lennon McCartney songwriting duo had time to come up with the lyrics.
Well, the song as been scrambled somewhat for a second time – though on this occasion with a purpose.
The idea came from Kevin Connolly senior – father of Kevin Herm Connolly. He is based in Galway. His son, a well known Irish indie songwriter and guitarist lives in Dublin.
“My dad came up with the idea,” Kevin Jnr told Hot Press, “and we finished it (remotely) over the last few days. I thought it’d be fun to record it and share.”
And so it is. The lyrics have been adapted to describe the experience of people under Covid-19.

It is a light, bright and sunny way to start the morning – a refreshing antidote – but with a sting in its ‘tale’...
Yesterday (Rewritten)
Yesterday
COVID-19 seemed so far away,
Now it looks as though it's here to stay,
Oh I believe in yesterday.
Suddenly, there's not half the shops there used to be,
And there's slippers where my shoes should be,
Oh yesterday, came suddenly.
Why it had to grow, I don't know,
We couldn't say,
While we stay at home,
How I long for yesterday.
Yesterday
Love was such an easy game to play,
My girlfriend lives more than 2k away
Oh how I long for yesterday.
Why it had to grow, I don't know,
We couldn't say,
While I stay at home,
How I long for yesterday.
Anyway
We have lots and lots of games to play,
And we have a place to hide away,
Tomorrow there'll be brighter days.
