As the man who penned ‘Gino’ and ‘Come on Eileen’ among other acclaimed hit records, he is one of the most intriguing figures in music over the past 40 years. Now he is on his way to Dublin for a DJ set.
Kevin Rowland – is set for a Dublin DJ show.
The legendary frontman and artistic visionary of Dexy's Midnight Runners will be guest of honour in The Grand Social on Friday October 12. Described as "one of the true, certifiable geniuses of British pop", Kevin Rowland is also a highly respected DJ, who infuses live performance over backing tracks with a hearty audience participation. Kevin's DJ set includes everything from Trojan reggae and Motown floorfillers to Marvin Gaye, T Rex, and Bryan Ferry.
Presenting his own uniquely brilliant interpretation of the modern DJ set, Kevin Rowland expresses a deep love of known and neglected gems alike. “Thrillingly finding gaps within verses to occasionally add his own emotive vocals, he revels in the chance to underline the profound lyrics of overlooked singles,” a press release says, and having been there and seen him in action, Hot Press can only concur. Kevin Rowlands has given the name Singjaying to his style, it’s a phenomenon that is at once moving and truly inspiring.
"When Kevin appears on stage tonight it’s not a separation pedestal to look down from,” one reviewer said. "In dedication and presentation he looks out on us, filling the room with friendly energy, gobsmacked and humbled by the heartfelt responses from a dancing crowd. There’s T-Rex, Roxy Music, Trojan Reggae tunes. On Howard Melvin & The Blue Notes’ ‘The Love I Lost’, he finds gaps within verses to add his vocal sympathy.
"He excels in highlighting the profound lyrics of overlooked pop singles. He sings along with ‘Year of Decision’ – a 1973 release from The Three Degrees, which he describes as ‘beautiful’. It’s emotional and truly inspiring. The space gets hotter as people pile in. Kevin removes top garments like live costume changes, revealing fiery orange long-johns and red plaid heavy duty hunting pants held up by suspender braces, topped off with leather brogue gangster spats.
"His style is a joy to soak in and as ever he’s ahead of the game. If you get a chance to see Kevin Rowland perform a DJ set, go at once. Here is a man with the capacity to fill you with hope and move you to tears.”
