"Some songs appear like a presence in a room, fully formed, willing to be breathed into being. These songs rarely come to me, but when they do, I'm entranced by our conversation."
Laura Quirke of Lemoncello has shared a solo song called 'In The Half Light'. Both the song and its accompanying visual was filmed at Vault Dance Studios in Belfast, while Quirke was there recording with Joshua Burnside.
"I want to share a song that is one of that presence in the room kind," said Quirke on YouTube. "I wrote these words on my phone the morning after an inspiring conversation I’d had with Josh and his friends about grief. They were an attempt to remind myself to be grateful for the people I am so lucky to have around me or to have once had around me.
"We were working that day in the studio and I took a break at one point to visit the piano in the dancehall downstairs. I took out my phone and recorded this while writing it, as I put the words to melody, as I put the melody to chords. I feel there’s a special quality to this recording, full of mistakes, full of stops and starts, a plane taking off at a certain point, that makes sense given the sentiment and puts the song in a lopsided frame that I really like."
The dancer in the breathtaking video, which was edited by Lauren Varian, is Carolyn Ingram. "Here is that moment, expanded by Joshua Burnside’s ideas at the end," Quirke continued. "Big love and thanks to them for what they gave to this."
