Limerick rapper's new single 'My Light' is taken from his forthcoming debut album Kuti Gris, which arrives on April 29th.
Earlier today, rapper and spoken word artist Willzee released his new single 'My Light,' featuring Nigerian-Irish singer Tolü Makay.
The track is set to appear on his upcoming, debut album Kuti Gris. The album will be backed by the Welcome to the New World label and is set to be released on April 29th. Hailing from Limerick, his culturally relevant lyricism is inspired locally, but resonates universally.
The topics raised in this single, along with other tracks featured in his discography, are often deeply personal. Citing musical heroes such as Eminem, Hopsin, and Steo Wall - Willzee takes on the larger issues facing current generations as well. His music is informed by realities such as climate change, the scourge of hard-drugs, as well as the personal issues he has encountered in his life.
“'My Light' is a story of a couple's journey through the highs and the lows, the loss of 3 angels and how love held together the strings of a relationship worn thin through self-blame, alcohol and drug abuse," he writes. |This is based on a true story I’ve experienced, focusing on the love of another and the support given when trapped in your own self-pity.”
The earnestness in his inflection speaks to real-life experiences in overcoming hardship. Through his music, the Irish artist finds a channel to be openly self-expressive. He hopes that this message of reclamation will reach out to help others beyond himself:
“Let the past be the past, but take it further,” he urges.
The newly released song also features backing vocals and lyrics from Tolü Makay. Her soulful voice underscores and softens the blow of the gritty, hard-hitting raps.
Willzee‘s first official appearance was as the lead actor in the music video of fellow label artist Enda Gallery’s single 'It’s Alright'. He also channels his talents into spoken word and script writing, winning the 2019 Virgin Media Discovers Short Film Competition with his script for Innocent Boy. The film premiered at the Dublin International Film Festival in February 2020.
