The Black Lives Matter anthem brings together Atlanta's Tribe One and Belfast's Rocky O'Reilly
Atlanta rapper Tribe One and Belfast producer Rocky O'Reilly join forces as Malibu Shark Attack to release 'The People Could Fly', a stormer of a tune which is being released in support of Bandcamp's Juneteenth NAACP Legal Defence Fund initiative.
The music platform is donating all of its fees today to funding the legal defences of people arrested during the Black Lives Matter protests.
“The recent killings of George Floyd, Tony McDade, Sean Reed, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and the ongoing state-sanctioned violence against black people in the U.S. and around the world are horrific tragedies,” reflects Bandcamp CEO Ethan Diamond. “We stand with those rightfully demanding justice, equality, and change, and people of colour everywhere who live with racism every single day, including many of our fellow employees and artists and fans in the Bandcamp community.”
Taking its name from the 1985 book, The People Could Fly: American Black Folktales, which was one of Tribe One's childhood favourites, it's the latest collaboration between the pair who hooked up online and recorded an album together with contributions from Ugly Duckling, Tim Wheeler, MC Lars and The Dudley Corporation. The first time they physically met was at the soundcheck before their first gig together in Leicester!
A former member of Northern Ireland electro poppers Oppenheimer, Rocky has also been writing recently with Tebi Rex, and producing the likes of Queen Zee, TOUTS and The Wood Burning Savages and recently writing with Irish hip hop duo Tebi Rex.
The new track is the first taster from Malibu Shark Attack's second album, which is yet another Covid-19 baby!
