With sold-out shows in Whelan's and The Workman's Club under his belt, as well as support slots for the likes of Damien Dempsey, Graham Mitchell has emerged as one of the most promising singer-songwriters in the country.
Raheny-raised singer-songwriter Graham Mitchell gave his audience an energetic livestream set last night, with a tracklist full of love songs and his trademark personal storytelling. Mitchell's star remains firmly on the up since his acclaimed single 'Maria Browne' featured in the Irish TV series Blood and his latest song, 'I Don't Mind', was selected as the Hot Press Track of the Day earlier this month.
Kicking off his intimate gig with the romantic offering about giving someone your all, titled 'Everything', Mitchell wears his heart on his sleeve throughout. With vulnerability and clear, passionate vocals; "I'd give anything to be your everything" becomes the song's primary mantra. Next up comes the North Dublin musician's rendition of 'Inside I'm Dancing', putting his own spin on the track. "I can hear my family clapping downstairs," he laughs afterwards, keeping the listeners engaged. Mitchell's live sets, whether virtual or in-person, often sees the singer speaking directly to the crowd, putting his charming personality on show. His Y&E Series livestream was no different, despite the audience watching through a screen. He delivers a rousing performance of 'I Don't Have To', a catchier, more up-tempo song, before giving a shoutout to the nurses from the National Drug Treatment Centre.
Slowing down the pace a little bit, Mitchell sings 'Shine' and encourages the crowd to keep their heads up when you're getting down. It's a track about shining through the cracks and finding positivity in tough times, so it fits perfectly with the national lockdown mood. Following 'Shine' comes his most recent release, 'I Don't Mind'. The artist seems most at ease when singing personal romantic tracks, offering a refreshing take on songwriting. Giving a snippet of 'St Anne's Romance', referencing football practice, school days and the local chipper, Mitchell clearly won't forget his roots. 'Fantasy Breakup' marks his last song of the night, and one of his best. "Hopefully we can have a bit of craic again after next week," he says, placing hope on the horizon for Christmas. Overall, it's easy to see why his support shows and sold-out gigs of recent times have earned him praise; he's a natural in front of a camera.
