Negro Impacto brought their brand of smooth soul to the Hot Press Instagram last night.
Negro Impacto electrified the Hot Press Instagram last night, with a groovy, soul-infused set.
Sitting in a studio, the Dundalk duo of Chi Chi and Laurence, AKA Strangelove, were joined by an additional guitarist, the three of them laughing, warming up and greeting the audience.
They kicked off their set with a chill track, grooved out guitar weaving into rhythmic bass. Chi Chi's vocals floated above the noise, the repeating chorus of "it feels just like a dream" airy and light against the heavier instrumentals. An incredibly strong exposition, it cemented the group as natural performers from the start.
Though the concert was virtual, the group did what they could to emulate a live gig — talking to the audience, getting close to the camera and even facilitating a livestream call and response.
"Okay so in the chat — I'm going to say Negro, and I want you guys to say Impacto. Get your keyboards ready!" Chi Chi instructed, before continuing into another smooth chorus. She laughed; "look at all the Impactos, you all get a prize!"

They continued with 'Lockdown Syndrome,' the pair's first-ever single, released last year. Driven by a repeating bass line, the track is quietly crescendoing — beginning with mellow, quiet vocals before ramping into an effortless chorus, the singer rapping over the smooth instrumentals behind her.
Next, they performed a cover of 'Come Over' by LA RnB outfit The Internet, infusing the track with Negro Impacto's own blend of fluid soul. Chi Chi's voice was perfectly suited to the track, the looping chorus and reverberated bass line near-hypnotic.
Strangelove took an intermission to say hello to listeners, before returning to his instrument. The group then went into a track that Chi Chi called 'Fangirl,' despite protestations from the musicians behind her — who insisted the track had "no name."
Named or not, the song slotted perfectly into Negro Impacto's niche of grooved-out neo soul, featuring rhythmic singing and rapping from Chi Chi superimposed over chill, bending guitar notes. "We're gonna break it down now," the singer said, before kneeling in front of the camera and delivering belted lyrics, voice dipping in and out of a high, clear head-voice and deep soul tones that Chi Chi drew from her chest.
"Sorry, I got a little bit emotional during that one," she joked. "Because obviously I wrote that about my true love, Bruno Mars."
They then launched into 'Anomaly,' a track that, according to Chi Chi, "is about if Bruno Mars ever decided to reject me." Taking a similar, soul-forward sound to the other songs but infusing it with a profound sense of melancholy, 'Anomaly' demonstrated the outfit's creative range.
'Carnival' followed, a bright, summery track that allowed the bass to shine with a strong, repeating line. For this one, the band got on their feet, the two musicians crossing the necks of their instruments before dancing along to Chi Chi's rising vocals.

Strangelove then took to the mic, announcing his new group — Laurence Kapinga and The Band. "Open call, we need drummers; but people who use drum machines only. Drum machines and violinists. So hit my line!"
They closed out the set with 'Mini Excursion' — finishing strong with an intense, soul track that allowed Chi Chi to show off her rapping prowess.
Giving an impeccable performance, Negro Impacto proved that despite a digital barrier, they can still deliver a deeply memorable set.
