Revisit Matthew Nolan's charismatic live performance last night on the Y&E Series – supported by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media.
22-year-old singer-songwriter Matthew Nolan has established himself as a serious force to be reckoned with over the last few years. Following a string of acclaimed solo singles, which have clocked up Spotify streams in their millions, the Drogheda artist found major international success as a member of the group Since September – who won Little Mix: The Search in November, and are set to join Little Mix on their arena tour next year.
The rising talent offered seven tracks in total during the 30-minute set, serving up both piano ballads and irresistibly catchy acoustic guitar melodies. Kicking off with 'Do It Again', co-written with his friend Fionn, Nolan's raw vocals and vulnerable lyrics make for the perfect down-tempo pop track.
Leading into 'Dear The Old Me' - a poignant number which honestly reflects on mental health, regrets and lost connections - and 'Wish You Lied A Little'; the singer-songwriter's introspective takes on themes of love and youth are deeply relatable. It's easy to see how Since September and Nolan as a solo act have garnered a steadily growing fanbase in their time.
Later offering a piano rendition of 'Maybe', his first single to hit a million streams, 'What If I Fall' and upbeat guitar track 'Secrets'; the artist concludes his packed set with fan favourite '11:11'. Rich vocals, simple messaging and infectious hooks are a foolproof formula for success, and Nolan has it all.
