Take a look back at the Drogheda artist's chilled out set on the Y&E Series below – supported by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media.
Following previous excursions into R&B and Afrobeat, Drogheda artist Wendy Godfrey took her first steps towards global pop stardom in 2020, with the release of her debut EP, Purple Emotions, produced by Solow The Astronaut. Drawing inspiration from old school jams, as well as modern pop powerhouses like Beyoncé, the next 12 months is set to be another landmark year for Hot for 2021 artist Godfrey.
Featuring on Sunday night's Y&E Series livestream, Wendy showed her audience exactly why she's on the rise, with honey-toned vocals, soft harmonies and empowering lyrics.
With two backing vocalists and a keyboard player in her crew, Godfrey came prepared. Starting off with the 1992 SWV hit 'Weak' before putting her own R&B spin on the Bee Gees classic 'How Deep Is Your Love', Wendy's expansive musical knowledge spans multiple genres and time periods. Injecting her own laidback vibes into the chorus of Marcus Miller's 'Lost Without You', the rising artist can make any cover seem like an original.
Moving into her 2020 single 'Bad Guy' before performing her Purple Emotions interlude 'Peace of Mind', Wendy's songwriting chops shine through with ease, simultaneously encapsulating the longing for romance but the need to choose yourself. Kicking off her July 2020 track 'How Far', Godfrey emphasises her ability to slide into pop as well as moulding herself around R&B and Afrobeats. The artist added that she's preparing her fans for a "summer jam" this year, Wendy built up excitement for what's to come in her future before concluding her Y&E Series livestream with covers of Ariana Grande's most recent hit 'Positions' and Clean Bandit's track 'Rather Be', featuring Jess Glynne.
From collaborations and summer singles to incoming performances; Wendy Godfrey will hopefully continue to keep us entertained for the rest of 2021. We can only thank her for it...
