Adapted by Shay Linehan from the novel by beloved Irish writer Maeve Binchy, this world premiere production is directed by Peter Sheridan and is in its run at the Gaiety Theatre from 24 April – 4 May.
The team behind the hugely successful stage adaptation of Minding Frankie, now bring to the stage an adaptation of Maeve Binchy’s first ever published novel Light A Penny Candle.
Maeve Binchy is one of those rare writers whose work springs from their larger-than-life personalities. Their unique voices are captured in their work. Ahead of its time, Binchy highlighted some of the major social issues still present today, all through the prism of her trademark wisdom, warmth, and humour.
Light A Penny Candle, is a tale of an enduring life-long friendship which asks some burning questions - a back-street abortion? A murder cover-up?
Aisling and Elizabeth have to survive DeValera’s Ireland, their raging hormones, and the struggle for independence in a world at war. Through it all, they discover that there is no right and wrong in this world, there is only what is right for those you love.
