New supergroup 3rd Secret dropped their surprise debut album yesterday, featuring '90s grunge icons.
New supergroup 3rd Secret have just dropped their self-titled debut album, much to the surprise of '90s grunge fans.
The band is an amalgamation of Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic, Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil, and Pearl Jam drummer Matt Cameron. The group is rounded out by guitarist Jon ‘Bubba’ Dupree as well as singers Jillian Raye and Jennifer Johnson.
The 11-track album spans a wide array of tones including the grunge style that came out of the American Pacific Northwest as a hybrid of punk and metal. Other alt-rock styles like indie-rock, stadium rock, and heavy metal can also be heard. The album even goes as far as classic blues sounds and features use of an accordion as one of its more theatrical elements. But even with these experimentations, the album never loses sight of the 90s grunge sound that 3rd Secret’s members built their legacies on.
The recording process for the album was split between several recording sessions, all of which included input from longtime Nirvana and Soundgarden collaborator Jack Endino.
Back in February, Krist Novoselic teased the album via social media saying: “I'm really busy trying to finish a record. In the middle of some hangups-Looking for a mid-March release. But it's a secret so don't tell anybody!!!”

The album was released independently on Spotify and YouTube Music. There is currently no word on the potential for release on physical formats.
