'From Staircase to Stage' tells the captivating story of acclaimed wordsmith Corey Woods, aka Raekwon the Chef, and hip-hop heroes Wu-Tang Clan.
Raekwon's foray into the autobiographical format doesn’t disappoint. Having grown up on the staircases of Park Hill in Staten Island, Raekwon describes his turbulent upbringing and the legacy of the iconic rap group in this fascinating memoir alongside Anthony Borza. Nothing is off limits: from Wu-Tang Clan’s underground origins, to the secrets behind infamous tracks, and what it took to break into the mainstream.
Raekwon’s first solo album, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx…, landed in 1995 to rave reviews, and was instantly labelled a rap classic. It’s incredible to read the artist’s insights from that chapter in history, not to mention his experience of becoming a father. The 320-page book also delves into his difficult childhood, with an absent father and a mother experiencing domestic abuse. His adolescence in the projects saw him witness guns, drug trafficking, criminal activity and gang murder. When the rapper escaped his harsh life in the projects, he nonetheless remained steadfastly true to his Staten Island roots.
From Staircase To Stage also includes Raekwon’s reminiscences on the fascinating rise to glory of Wu Tang Clan, one of the most acclaimed and groundbreaking hip-hop acts of all time. Overall, a highly compelling read.
