Netflix have released images from their darker adaptation of Nickelodeon classic Sabrina, the Teenage Witch
The new version will be titled Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, inspired by the 2014 comic of the same. It will reimagine the origin and adventures of the teenage witch as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror and the occult, a departure from the Nickelodeon sitcom starring Melissa Joan Hart.
The images released so far serve as proof of this new take on the character. The first (above) sees lead actress Kiernan Shipka (Feud, Mad Man) in full Red Riding Hood attire. Meanwhile, the second (below) shows a night time pagan ritual.
From Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Netflix say the series will be tonally in the vein of Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist. It will focus on Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature — half-witch, half-mortal — while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit.

Shipka will be backed by a supporting cast of Miranda Otto, Lucy Davis, Ross Lynch, Michelle Gomez, Richard Coyle and Bronson Pinchot.
Speaking about Shipka's casting Aguirre-Sacasa said in a statement: “We’re all such huge fans of Kiernan’s work that when we started talking about who this new incarnation of Sabrina could be, her name was on everyone’s wish list. This is a darker, more macabre version of Sabrina, and we’re incredibly excited for people to see Kiernan make this iconic character her own.”
Just in time for Halloweeen, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will be available to stream October 26, 2018. The series will consist of 20 one-hour episodes.
