Netflix have acquired the rights to Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond, a documentary which details Carrey's intensive method acting to prepare for the role of Andy Kaufman in the 1999 docudrama Man on the Moon.
Allegedly, Carrey’s performance of comedian Andy Kaufman in Man on the Moon went so far that he did not even react when people did not call him “Andy”. Even outside the set, Carrey did not leave his role during a two-hour phone call with How the Grinch Stole Christmas director, Ron Howard, when discussing their new project. Later, Carrey even claimed that it did not feel like himself, but Andy Kaufman, doing the biopic about the comedian.
The strange situation on set is now captured in a documentary that Netflix just bought the rights to. Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond – Featuring a Very Special, Contractually Obligated Mention of Tony Clifton shows how Carrey transformed into Kaufman - and lost himself in the process. Containing behind-the-scenes footage of Man on the Moon, as well as interviews with Carrey conducted 18 years later, the film seeks to give us an insight into Carrey's strange method acting.
Perhaps paying homage to the late Andy Kaufman or perhaps method acting for another film, Jim Carrey made the news elsewhere this week with a bizarre interview at New York Fashion Week.
Stating that he wanted to go to the event, because it was the most “meaningless thing that I could come to”, Carrey questioned not only the puzzled reporter’s but also his own existence.
