HBO has announced that they are finishing up a two-part documentary series on the life of Elvis Presley. The series promises to be one of the most in-depth looks at Presley's life, as it recounts everything from his childhood to the 1976 Jungle Room recordings. The project was given access to the Graceland archives facilitated by Authentic Brands Group, and was created in partnership with the Elvis Presley family estate. Even the biggest Elvis fans can look forward to more than enough never-before-seen material, as the film will include unreleased photos and footage from various private collections across the globe.
President of HBO miniseries Kary Antholis released a statement, announcing a collaboration with director Thom Zimmy, who previously worked with HBO on the Springsteen documentaries The Ties That Bind and The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town. Antholis also outlined the studio's inspiration for the project, saying, "The producers came to HBO and Sony with the idea for a film drawing upon very rare footage that captures Elvis' musicianship in a new and exciting way. The artistry on display in that footage reminded us of the great work by Jon Landau and Thom Zimny on HBO films documenting the studio artistry of Bruce Springsteen, and we are thrilled to have them at the helm to lend their unique cinematic perspectives to this iconic, complex and singular artist."
