A unique anthology of art, comics and illustrations to highlight the need to repeal the Eighth Amendment was launched last night in Dublin on the eve of International Women's Day...
MINE is an anthology with over 30 contributors; and the stories and art within the pages represent creative responses to the struggle for repealing the Eighth Amendment in Ireland from a wide range of perspectives, both female and male.
The MINE anthology launch at the Workman's Club on Tuesday, 7 March featured speeches and performances from actor and writer, Tara Flynn, who contributed the foreword to MINE; writer Sarah Maria Griffin, who recited her poem 'We Face This Land'; Linda Kavanagh, Abortion Rights Campaign spokesperson; and Karen Harte, artist and creator of the MINE anthology.
“We are so excited that the launch of the MINE anthology has finally arrived, and we can share this wonderful collection of art, comics and illustrations which is an artistic response to the struggle for reproductive rights and the campaign to repeal the 8th amendment," Karen Harte said, speaking shortly before the launch.
“We will bring together contributors, artists and activists to celebrate the launch and continue to raise much needed funds for the Abortion Rights Campaign and the hugely important work they do in promoting national support for a referendum to repeal the 8th.”
Alternative female pop duo, Æ MAK performed on the night too. The band has appeared at a number of acclaimed Irish festivals including Body & Soul, Electric Picnic, Other Voices, Knockanstockan and Another Love Story, and were named one of the ‘State Faces of 2016’ by State Magazine and one of GoldenPlec's ‘Plec Picks 2016’.
The four-piece female band Mongoose also took to the stage on the night to perform their up-beat, acoustic “melty-pot music”, with flavours of jazz and folk.
Copies of the MINE anthology, merchandise and prints from the anthology, were available to purchase on the night, with all the proceeds going to the Abortion Rights Campaign. For more information visit the Facebook page: www.facebook.com/MineAnthology.
