Official Trailer Drops For 'X-Men: Dark Phoenix'
The film was initially scheduled to be in cinemas for November 2018.
After several re-shoots and a delay of a few months, fans have finally been given a first glimpse of 'Dark Phoenix', the sequel in the X-Men series to 2016's 'Apocalypse', with the release of the film's official trailer after it premiered on James Corden's 'The Late Late Show'.
The film focuses on Jean Grey, played by 'Game Of Thrones' star Sophie Turner, and her loss of the ability to control her powers after a rescue mission in space goes wrong.
The official synopsis reveals that:
In DARK PHOENIX, the X-MEN face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite -- not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.
The Dark Phoenix story line was last addressed in 2006's 'X-Men: The Last Stand', which is almost unanimously viewed as the nadir of the franchise for merely making it a sub-plot of the film as opposed to a part of the main narrative.
Due for release on the 14th of February 2019, this newest installment promises to make it the central premise of the film, with the trailer showing the character accidentally using her powers as a child, before fast forwarding into the future where she is again struggling to maintain control over them. The preview also features Turner alongside alongside James McAvoy (Professor X), Michael Fassbender (Magneto), Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique) and Nicholas Hoult (Beast).
