After releasing his catchy new collab ‘Love Is A Lie’, Afro-Irish rapper GNS discusses heartfelt lyrics, musical inspirations and plans for 2023.
What sparked your early passion for music?
I recorded a song with a friend who made the instrumental, and I asked him to make more, but he said go and learn how to produce beats yourself. This was the summer of 2019 and I had no musical insight. I was a fish out of water, but then I started producing and rapping, and that’s kind of where it started.
What’s the story behind ‘Love Is A Lie’?
I made a bunch of instrumentals, because I just finished college and was making beats that were meant to go for sale. I met V-Sensei at the Vision Lab Open Mic Night in July 2022, showed him my beats, and we worked together to finish it. I know sometimes we do feel like love is a lie, but we still chase it regardless. That’s how the song came about over the span of one summer, but it took a while for me to be fully happy with it.
What impact do you hope your songs have on people?
I really want people to listen to my music and feel things. I have this one snippet on my Instagram where the instrumental was like my therapist, in a sense, and I was just saying things I never would have said to other people. I want people to relate to my music. To make them feel happy, sad, positive, negative, or any kind of emotion, would be amazing.
Who do you draw musical inspiration from?
My first musical inspiration was Santan Dave. He made rapping look cool for the nerds in my eyes, and he made me feel like I could do music as well. My second inspiration was Tyler, the Creator. He’s someone who really pushes the boundaries on creativity and makes what he thinks is good. There are also some Irish artists I’m inspired by, like Jafaris and Gliders, who made me realise it was possible to do music in Ireland.
What else do you have in store for 2023?
In April, I’ll be releasing a new single called ‘Aesthetic’, as well as one more feature with another Irish artist. I also want to drop a tape with lots of risk-taking and experimental sounds that I’ve been working on for the past few years.
