As Melanin Tee returns with ‘Act Your Racks’, Galway’s rapidly rising star discusses inspirations, future plans, and why it’s time for Irish hip-hop to hit the world stage.
What was the inspiration behind your new single?
It’s basically me telling people to stay in their lane. Stop pretending to be something you’re not. You can go outside and act like you’ve got all this money and you’re a big man, but that facade can only be kept up for so long. Eventually, you get caught up in the lies.
What do you think of the current state of Ireland’s hip-hop scene?
I compare it to America – they have so many artists, and they’re on top of the music game right now, and have been for a long time. Then you look at the UK – they started from the bottom. But now Americans are collaborating with UK artists. There’s a lot going on. So, when I look at the Irish scene now, with so many artists coming out – especially females – I feel like it’s Ireland’s turn to grow and be put on the map.
You give off a strong, independent energy. Do you think it’s important to enter the music industry with a free-spirited attitude?

I’ve accepted myself, and I’ve accepted that this is what I want to do. It’s important to enter with that kind of attitude, because you’re freer, and you’re not so reserved. Music is a form of self-expression, so if you’re not open-minded, you’ll be swayed by other people and you’ll only be hurting yourself. In Ireland, it’s kind of like, ‘Jesus what is she doing? Why is she wearing that outfit?’ It’s very scary for a lot of people here. But you’re expressing your music – it’s your stuff, so you should do what you want.
Who inspires you the most in the industry?
It would have to be Megan Thee Stallion. I love her confidence, it’s so contagious. I love her vibe, and how she dances as well. To be honest, the whole American music industry inspires me. I love the freedom of it – they can do whatever and it’s normal over there.
What can we expect from you in the next few months?
I’m gonna be releasing a mixtape this year and I have a few collaborations in the works. And I have my biggest performance yet, for the Limerick SummerFest on June 18. It’s going to be an amazing opportunity to network and to show people what Melanin Tee is about.
