Wayne Byrne, one of Hot Press’s own writers, has written a new book about the acclaimed director Tom DiCillo.
The Cinema of Tom DiCillo: Include Me Out is to be published on September 5th by Columbia University Press.
There will be a launch event held in The Gallery in Naas Library on October 21st, from 3pm to 5pm.
This book is the first full-length study on the career of the acclaimed, award-winning writer-director (and actor, musician, animator, and cinematographer) Tom DiCillo.
The book features a foreword by DiCillo’s frequent collaborator, actor-director Steve Buscemi. Yes, Mr. Pink himself, blessing your eyes with his written eloquence.
It also includes exclusive interviews with Sam Rockwell, Peter Dinklage, John Turturro, Catherine Keener, Chris Noth, as well as Robby Krieger and John Densmore of The Doors, amongst others.
This book examines DiCillo’s career throughout the post-punk, No Wave movement of the 1980’s, through the indie boom of the 1990’s, up to DiCillo’s contemporary work in documentary cinema.
For those who do not know, Tom DiCillo started his career in film school studying alongside other soon-to-be-famous directors like Jim Jarmush and Spike Lee. After some time working as an actor, DiCillo started to work behind the camera as a director and cinematographer.
His films include Johnny Suede, which featured the debut of a young Brad Pitt, and Living In Oblivion, a satirical look at the process of independent film making based upon DiCillo's experiences filming Johnny Suede. His later work progressed towards a focus on documentaries with the release of When You’re Strange, a film about The Doors, and Down In Shadowland, a documentary filmed in the New York City underground subway system.

In the process of writing this book, Wayne Byrne has been able to develop a relationship with Tom DiCillo. He even has recorded guitar for songs released by DiCillo’s musical project The Black and Blue Orkestre. From this privileged position, Byrne has been able to gain a deep understanding of DiCillo’s world and creative process.
Byrne now understands DiCillo's soul and has rendered it in book form.
The Cinema of Tom DiCillo takes the reader on a journey through both the independent film and Hollywood studio systems, as documented through the career of this acclaimed auteur filmmaker.
This is Wayne Byrne’s first book. Hot Press still remembers his first article like it was yesterday. *sigh* They grow up so fast.
