ONLY YOU (Directed by Norman Jewison. Starring Marisa Tomei, Robert Downey Jr., Bonnie Hunt, Joaquim De Almeida, Fisher Stevens)
Another classic song gets hi-jacked by a movie. Well, maybe not that classic. Only You is mawkish enough on its own account, and few memories of it are likely to be spoiled by this mildly entertaining romantic comedy. Clearly meant to tug the same heart strings as Sleepless In Seattle, it poses the age old (and frankly decrepit) question: is there someone somewhere meant only for you?
Faith Corvatch (Marisa Tomei) certainly believes so. She even has a name: Damon Bradley, supplied by a ouija board in her youth. Having never met her elusive other half, however, she is about to marry a chiropodist called Dwayne. On the eve of her wedding, Faith intercepts a call for her fiancee from a childhood chum – yup, you guessed, Damon Bradley – and sets off to Italy in hot pursuit. For some reason feet loom large in this footloose comedy for, having left her chiropodist behind, Marisa finds her pursuit of Mr Right dogged by Mr Wright (Downey Jr), a shoe salesman. What can it all mean? Perhaps a Cinderalla analogy was intended (if the shoe fits) but a problems with corn(s) is the analogy I prefer.

Both Tomei and Downey Jr., having excelled in quirkier roles but are lifeless enough here to look like they really do belong together, and the vaguely witty plot cannot escape its own sense of inevitability. There are some fun minor characterisations, and Sven Nykvist’s photography makes Italy look appealing – not that hard really – but Only You is only for diehard romantics. As I could have predicted from the very title, this film was not meant for me.
