'The Favourite' and 'Roma' each received 10 nominations. Irish cinematographer Robbie Ryan was nominated for 'The Favourite'.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed the nominations for the 91st Academy Awards.
The Favourite, which was produced by Ireland's Element Pictures, and Alfonso Cuarón's Roma have received the most nominations, with each of the films securing 10 nods, including Best Picture. Meanwhile, Irish cinematographer Robbie Ryan (Fish Tank, American Honey) was nominated for his work in The Favorite and the controversial, Irish-produced Detainment received a nomination for Best Live-Action Short. [See this Thursday's print issue for our interview with Vincent Lambe, the writer and director of Detainment.] Late Afternoon, which was produced by the Irish animation powerhouse Cartoon Saloon, was nominated for Best Animated Short Film.
Bohemian Rhapsody and Green Book, which some have dubbed the villains of awards season, also received Best Picture nominations.Other notable inclusions were Yalitza Aparicio's nomination for Best Actress in Roma, which potentially raises the likelihood of Roma becoming a frontrunner for Best Picture. Lady Gaga unsurprisingly secured a Best Actress nomination for A Star Is Born.
The awards ceremony will take place February 24 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.
