Filming for the highly awaited sequel will begin early next year, according to reports.
The This Is Spinal Tap sequel is raring to go: director Rob Reiner has confirmed that the cast of the original cult classic will return for filming at the end of February.
Reiner was speaking to comedian Richard Herring on Herring's podcast when he dropped the news: after Herring expressed his love and admiration for the 1984 release, Reiner told him that "everybody's back" when filming begins next year.
He then went on to reveal that the sequel would feature some of the biggest rock stars in history: "Paul McCartney is joining us, and Elton John." He also name-dropped US country music star Garth Brooks as another star cameo.
Almost the entire original cast, including Michael McKean, Harry Shearer and Christopher Guest, are attached to the project. Unfortunately, Tony Hendra (who played Spinal Tap's long-suffering manager Ian Faith) passed away in 2021, and according to reports, his character's death will be part of the sequel's plot.
Plans for a Spinal Tap sequel first surfaced in May 2022, when the project was shopped around at the Cannes Film Festival. “I can tell you hardly a day goes by without someone saying, why don’t you do another one?" Reiner explained. "For so many years, we said, ‘Nah.’ It wasn’t until we came up with the right idea how to do this. You don’t want to just do it, to do it. You want to honour the first one and push it a little further with the story."
