Phelim Drew and The Drew House Band have announced a special tribute show, Remembering Ronnie, in honour of his late father — musician, actor and The Dubliners band-member Ronnie Drew. The show will take place at St. Patricks Church, Ringsend Village on Friday, May 27, with 100% of proceeds going towards the Irish Refugee Council in aid of newly arrived Ukranians.
Presented by All in a Row, the show is dedicated to the legacy of Ronnie Drew, who passed away in 2008. Though the charity has historically split proceeds between the RNLI and The Irish Underwater Search and Recovery Unit, this year they're shifting focus towards providing critical funds to women and children arriving from Ukraine. The proceeds will go towards not only medical assistance and housing support, but also necessary costs such as childcare.
The voice behind Dubliners hits the likes of 'Seven Drunken Nights' and 'The Irish Rover,' Ronnie Drew is inextricably intwined with Irish musical history. Whether within the band, solo or accompanying acts such as Dropkick Murphys, The Pogues and Christy Moore, he became iconic for his distinctive, gravelly voice, long beard and piercing blue eyes. One of the most iconic Irish folk singers in modern history, Drew has an extensive discography — releasing his last album, Pearls, in 2007.
In addition to music, his son Phelim Drew is a graduate of the Gaiety School of Acting, having been appearing in movies and television since 1989. He has performed on covers of 'The Irish Rover' for Francie Conway's album, The Wild Atlantic Way - A Journey in Irish Songs.
