The Belfast punk-band have been making waves with their raucous, politically-minded tunes.
Hot Press is delighted to premiere 'Night At The Woods', the latest single from Belfast-based punk rock outfit Gender Chores. The garage-rock inspired track calls back to rock 'n' roll nostalgia of the 90s with a fresh, modern twist.
Inspired by an indie video game of the same name, 'Night In The Woods' is "a broadside at slum landlords and property developers," the band explain. "The city is becoming unaffordable and off-limits, like a distorted video game. Singer and bassist Sam explains: “I think there’s a collective fury at the looming gentrification of Belfast. There’s outrage at the fact that it costs so much to live where we want to live.”
Gender Chores attack the failings of the Northern Irish government with rage and wit, and their live shows were keen moments of punk spirit and alternative thinking.
The band formed in 2018, and following the lead of the riot grrrl movement, Sam and guitarist Sophie recorded ‘Territory’ in the most basic form. Sam sang under a duvet to dampen the sound; guitars went directly into the machine and Sophie programmed drums. Later recordings like ‘Womansplain’ and ‘Toast Sandwich’ furthered the DIY ethos while the band complemented Belfast’s underground scene, sharing gigs with the likes of Strange New Places, Sister Ghost and Problem Patterns.
