A meagre body count and lack of gore leaves us less than empathetic...
What is the point of Prom Night? Why is it a remake when the plot bears little, if any, resemblance to the 1980 original? Why have the camp superstars of that Bundy inspired slasher flick – Leslie Nielsen and Jamie Lee Curtis – been replaced by Billy and Mandy Everyteen?
We could live with the infidelity if only the people behind Prom Night knew what they were doing. Somehow, some way, they’ve thrown together a video nasty set-up – psycho ex-teacher busts out of jail to stalk nubile former student on her prom night – then failed to deliver a single moment of horror.
The meagre body count and lack of gore is bad enough. But the weedy Final Girl (Hairspray’s Brittany Snow; not her fault) is downright criminal. Not once does she rise to the occasion. Not once do we feel that she is properly in jeopardy. Not once do we care either way.
