Adam Sandler ditches his, erm, funny man persona in favour of psychological gloom for this post-9/11 melodrama. His muffled portrayal of a widower who has retreated into insanity after the loss of his family at the World Trade Centre seems to suggest that being Bob Dylan is the worst form of mental illness. But that’s okay. He’s one of the better things about this incoherent enterprise. Don Cheadle, always a reliable sort, essays an old pal from dental school who comes to Mr. Sandler’s rescue while undergoing an ill-defined mid-life crisis. Jada Pinkett Smith is his brittle though loving missus. Saffron Burrows turns up as a stalker. But what everyone is doing in this movie remains unclear.
Then the psychiatrist (Liv Tyler!) arrives. Why was I watching this again?
