The video reflects Carney's therapeutic journey through her recent PTSD diagnosis.
After Rosie Carney's stunning 2019 debut Bare, the Donegal songstress makes her triumphant return with a brand new single and video called 'when i look at you', out today via Color Study.
“I see my songs in images as I write them," Carney says. The synesthesiac method contributed heavily to the song's visual component, and helped Carney to see that she had to break free of her comfort zone. She puts herself in front of the camera, and the result is darker and more arresting than we've ever seen her. "I wanted to move my body, but I knew I had to do it in a way that would tell the story of the pain and fear I've been through both physically and mentally over the past 10 years...I knew when my mum couldn’t talk to me after watching the video that we had succeeded,” she says.
The song feels world-weary, but perhaps justifiably so. After all, Carney has been no stranger to pain in her life. But the video carries another kind of lament: one for the environment. Under the weeping blooms of a tree, Carney takes on a distinct Earth Mother quality, human pain mimicking the pain of the planet. All this said, Carney's iron-like resilience is at the forefront of 'when i look at you'. She's back, better than ever and most importantly, Rosie Carney isn't going anywhere.
Carney's forthcoming EP is due for release on April 10.
