RTÉ’s Ryan Tubridy has confirmed that he tested positive for Covid-19.

However, there was good news for fans and friends of the man who is widely considered Ireland's leading broadcaster.

Ryan Tubridy himself released a statement a short time ago, which said reassuringly that he had come to the end of the illness. Last Friday night’s Late Late Show was presented by Miriam O’Callaghan, who stood in for Ryan on what was a special programme dedicated to health workers and their fight against the coronavirus. A highlight of the show was a superb performance by global superstar Hozier, including a stirring rendition of the Irish ballad, ’The Parting Glass’.

"Like so many other people in Ireland, I tested positive,” the statement issued by Ryan Tubridy said, "but I was in the very fortunate position to have a very unintrusive experience, which I now have come to the end of.

"While I've been at home watching television and listening to the radio, I have been bowled over by the extraordinary work of our front line heroes and their families who continue to make Ireland a healthier and safer place.

"I look forward to being back to work really soon."

RTÉ had no further comment to make.

The Ryan Tubridy radio show, which is on RTÉ Radio One at 9am on weekdays, is currently being presented in his stead by the well known impressionist, writer and broadcaster, Oliver Callan. Oliver will continue in the role this week. RTÉ will make an announcement later in the week in relation to who will present the Late Late Show on Friday.

There was widespread praise for Miriam O'Callaghan's handling of the show last week.
