The Irish actress picked up the Award at a ceremony on Sunday night for her performance in Lady Bird, and people couldn't be happier.
The Irish actress had tough competition, coming in the form of Judi Dench for Victoria & Abdul, Helen Mirren for The Leisure Seeker, Margot Robbie for I, Tonya, and Emma Stone for Battle of the Sexes.
Taking to the stage, Ronan gave a shout-out to her mother, who was watching via FaceTime on “someone’s phone over there.” She then went on to thank all the women that she loves in her own life and “everyone in this room.”
Ronan’s portrayal of high school senior Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson, and her relationship with her mother (played by Laurie Metcalf), has been praised for capturing the turbulence of adolescence. The film premiered in September to a standing ovation at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Lisa Hannigan was one of the many familiar faces taking to Twitter to offer her congratulations to Ronan.
