The National Library of Ireland will host a number of free events aimed at families and children of all ages throughout the month of July.
Events will include a two-day camp for budding teenage historians interested in exploring history through both traditional research methods and interactive digital technology.
The ‘Hands on History’ camp, aimed at post-primary students, will take place from 10am to 4pm on Wednesday, 19th July and 10am to 4pm on Wednesday, 26th July in the Library’s main building on Kildare Street, in collaboration with The Nerve Centre. The camp is free but booking is required at [email protected] or 01-6030259 / 01-6030346.
Further family events taking place throughout July include:
* Drop in Tuesdays: visit the NLI for a fun afternoon of trails each Tuesday in July with stories and drawings that bring the National Library to life for all ages. Tuesday, 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th, 2.15pm-3.30pm. No booking required.
* Catchy Captions - Capturing Newspapers at the National Library workshop: this workshop will explore the lost world of newspapers. Participating children will learn how to become an illustrator and create their own catchy caption and cartoon. Thursday, 20th July, 2.30pm to 4pm. No booking required.

* Miss Battersby's Birds - Flapping Good Fun workshop: as part of this workshop, children will explore Miss Battersby’s watercolour sketches of birds, which live at the National Library, and will create a bird picture of their own. Thursday, 27th July, 2.30pm to 4pm. No booking required.
Speaking about the events, Katherine McSharry the Library’s Head of Outreach, said: “The NLI places great importance on our relationship with our younger audiences. We aim to provide events and services for all ages, and of course this includes children and teenagers.
"This month, we have a great selection of family-friendly events including workshops ranging from creating your own book cover to sketching colourful birds. We’re particularly excited about our two-day ‘Hands on History’ summer camp, working with our partners Nerve Centre, which will combine traditional historical research methods with virtual reality and green screen technology.”
