“It is so early in the investigation that we don’t have a motive at this time,” said Toronto police inspector Paul Krawczyk.
A security guard working at Drake’s mansion in Toronto’s Bridle Path neighbourhood was hospitalised with serious injuries after being shot outside the residence early Tuesday morning.
The victim was standing outside the home’s entrance when the shooting occurred, Toronto police inspector Paul Krawczyk said at a press conference outside the Ontario rapper’s home. He said the shooting was captured on video, but the assailant fled in a vehicle and a motive has not yet been determined. Witnesses told Canadian media he had sustained several gunshot wounds, including one to the chest.
Krawczyk said he couldn’t confirm whether Drake was home during the incident but said his team has been cooperating with the investigation. The rapper has seen an uptick of press coverage amidst his involvement in an increasingly hostile and publicised rap feud with Kendrick Lamar. Over the past several days, the two rap giants have traded personal insults through songs, shoehorning as many disparaging comments - from upbringings and families to careers and lifestyles - into a track as possible. Lamar’s most recent diss track, ‘Not Like Us,’ used a satellite image of Drake’s mansion as its cover art.
Drake himself has often mentioned his home location in his songs, including with his own 2021 track ‘7am on Bridle Path.’ He also offered a tour of the residence in his ‘Toosie Slide’ music video.

Krawczyk said police were aware of the tension between the two rappers but didn’t link the high-profile dispute to the shooting.
“It is so early in the investigation that we don’t have a motive at this time,” Krawczyk said.
