Saints and Wayne Rooney be praised! 19 years after bringing us the comic masterpiece that is Spinal Tap, Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer are back with the equally chortlesome A Mighty Wind. Doing for finger-in-the-ear-folk what Tap did for dodgy-banana-down-the-trousers-metal, the film has received a unanimous “thumbs up” from critics Stateside and opens here later in the month.
The action centres around a reunion concert in New York featuring 60’s heroes Mitch & Mickey (the epitome of young love until their partnership was torn apart by heartbreak); classic troubadours The Folksmen (whose records were endlessly entertaining for anyone able to punch a hole in the centre to play them); and The New Main Street Singers (the most meticulously colour-coordinated “neuftet” ever to hit an amusement park near you). Needless to say, the gig goes horribly and hysterically wrong.
“I played a lot of folk music as a kid in New York where it was actually happening in the ’60s and so it was something I knew, so basically that was the place to start,” Guest explains.
