The Belfast actor will read Heaney's translation of Virgil’s Aeneid, his last great project, at The Abbey Theatre this month.
Inspired by his A-Level teacher, Heaney’s acclaimed translation of Book VI (which tells the moving story of Aeneas’ descent into the Underworld to look for his father) is the culmination of a lifelong engagement with the work.
In this special adaptation, Stephen Rea – who knew and worked with Heaney for more than 30 years – and cellist Neil Martin perform the extraordinary Book VI in a dialogue combining words and music. In their adaptation, Stephen Rea and Neil Martin engage with each other through words and music. Seated facing each other, they sound the depths of this extraordinary work.
This event is organised in support of Youth Horizons, Jobstown, which offers a second chance at education to young people.
