Contrary to popular belief we’re not familiar with every venue in the country, but below – with the aid of our Hotpress student reps – we provide a guide to some of our favourite student hang-outs
Cork
The student hang-out The Oval is in Cork. It’s really laid back and lots of students are regulars here.
The Lobby is also a really cool place. It’s comfy and the atmosphere is extremely intimate. They have good bands playing once every few weeks.
The Spailpín Fàinneach is kind of an old man’s pub, but in a good way. It’s got a huge fire so it’s really warm and cosy. There’s often a trad band playing, usually on Monday nights, and it even has a snug! It rocks!
Dublin
Whelan’s is one of the best venues in Dublin. It has indie club nights as well as gigs, so it’s mainly an alternative crowd that hang out there. You’re guaranteed top class music as well.
Temple Bar Music Centre is another popular venue. They have gigs practically every night of the week and great DJs too after 11. Screamadelica on Thursdays is the most popular with students.
Doyles is a cool place as well, just beside Trinity on Pearse St. They have singer songwriter nights there on Tuesdays and there are always plenty of students around since it’s so close to Trinity College.
Galway
The King’s Head is one of the City of the Tribes’ fiinest hostelries. They have great bands and jazz on a Sunday morning. It’s the perfect hangover hang out. There’s a mixed crowd and you’ll always meet someone you know.
The Róisín Dubh is another quality venue, similar to Whelan’s in Dublin – it always has amazing gigs and great atmosphere and is genuinely laid back.
The Blue Note is a personal favourite – great DJs and live acts. Chilled.

Limerick
There’s quality bars aplenty in Limerick. The Wild Geese, beside the Art College, is a student-friendly bar with a warm atmosphere, live music and good craic. Other bars to check out include Molly Malone’s, Nancy Blake’s, Nestor’s and Nevada Smith’s.
Definitely the hottest live venue in Limerick, Dolan’s Warehouse attracts some great live bands and DJs from Ireland and abroad.
Other good venues are the High Stool and The Savoy, who work in conjunction with promoters AMC to bring international acts like D4 and Nad Navillus to Limerick.
On the clubbing scene, Soul Clinic in Dolan’s Warehouse on a Thursday night is a big hit with the Art College crowd.
Hospital, once monthly on Tuesday nights, and Diverse on Wednesday nights – both in Costello’s – are also the real deal. Other clubs worth a blast are D2 and the Globe.
Waterford
In Waterford, Geoff’s Pub on Michael Street is a great place to simply just chill out with a few mates. Afterwards, The Forum offers a choice of excellent nightclubs: downstairs Musiklab keeps clubbers on their toes with it’s house and techno beats, while upstairs Shakedown plays a great mix of Alternative and Indie. No need to go any further than that!
