DISNEY's '90s output has been somewhat hit-and-miss, with only 1997's astonishingly dark Hercules coming close to must-see status, but this one is a cracker, and compulsory viewing for those privileged enough to be in touch with their offspring.

Tarzan relies on the strength of classic old-fashioned storytelling to see it through, and it succeeds admirably. The script crackles with life, and features copious helpings of comedy, violence and romance, while the animation is obviously first-rate stuff.
Everybody knows the plot but the encounter between the hero and Jane is one of the most touchingly-written romantic subplots seen on screen in many a year, and the action is hardcore enough by Disney standards (violence! What fun!!!)
The presence of several Phil Collins songs on the soundtrack obviously ruins a few scenes, but apart form that, Tarzan verges on the flawless. Whether or not it qualifies as a 'must-see' depends entirely on how much of a sucker you are for cartoon animation.

This is the most joyful ninety-minute episode since Hibernian's epic 4-3 victory at Dundee a couple of months ago (and no, we haven't won since).
Enjoy!
