Sony UK and Ireland boss Fergal Gara ushers in a new generation with the PlayStation 4.
What can people expect from the PlayStation 4?
“The graphical experience will be significantly better. Over time, developers will push the power of the PS4 even more. It’s more of a socially connected console. PlayStation 3 launched into a world [in 2006] where Facebook was in its infancy and Twitter wasn’t even thought of. Rather than being an exclusive ghetto social network, it aims to interface the PlayStation Network with other social media. Whether that be broadcasting the gameplay, or grabbing snippets of achievements, using the Share button on the Dual Shock controller.
We have a whole new interface. The controller is more developed than in past generations. The Playroom, included in all PlayStation 4 devices, shows how those innovations can be brought to life. The controller, in conjunction with the camera, brings about new and fun ways to play. It also demonstrates where developers could take PS4.”
How about Live Game Broadcasting. A couple from the U.S. recently set up their own talk show, using Playroom People, garnering over 200,000 hits.
“You’ve got an HD camera and you’re able to broadcast your gameplay. In Playroom, gameplay involves you sat on the sofa so you absolutely could do that.”
PS3 was very indie developer friendly. Will we see more indie games on PS4?
“We’ll see far more. Ease of development has moved on. We’ve deliberately made PS4 as easy to develop for as possible, whether you are a big or small publisher. We’ve put a concerted effort into the program of engaging these developers. The support base is wider. You can also self-publish. That means we’ll have more indie games from day one. They’re not usually playing with huge budgets, but they’re often playing with great ideas.”
What will people with a PlayStation Vita be able to do with PS4?
“Remote Play requires a strong Wi-Fi signal, but once you’ve got that it’s seamless and exciting. Every PlayStation 4 game published so far is PS Vita compatible. I think it will solve many a household struggle of who is hogging the television. Maybe over time we will extend that outside the home. Not only is Vita a standalone console, with its own big catalogue of games, but it’s also an amazing accessory for PS4.”
PlayStation 4 doesn’t play CD’s or video media like MP4’s. Will it ever?
“It’s quite likely. You’re right to point out the entire job list of everything we might like to include in PS4 hasn’t landed on day one. As with PS3, new things will be added. It’s great that these consoles are organic machines. They evolve and become better over time.”
Aside from the launch titles like Killzone: Shadow Fall and Knack, what other titles can we expect in the new year?
“Drive Club, a socially connected driving game. Infamous: Second Son will be coming in March. The Order 1886. There’s another Uncharted title too. We’re proud to be working closely with Ubisoft on Watch Dogs and Activision on Destiny.”
