Pavel Barter reviews PS4 racing game The Crew 2.
Buckle up with one of the most OTT racing games on the block. Airplanes, boats, automobiles, and motorbikes can all be picked up with the tap of a button, as you traverse the United States performing time trials and crazy stunts: sick-bag close at hand.
Players begin as rookies, completing races to unveil new challenges, vehicles, and landmarks. In a nod to the vapidity of social media, the more you show off, the more virtual followers will follow you. Even racing videogames are a popularity competition nowadays.
The glut of activity and open world destinations keep boredom at bay. One moment you’ll be flying a fighter jet beneath the Golden Gate Bridge; the next jumping a Porsche off a skyscraper in New York; then racing a speedboat over the Hoover Dam. There are over 120 activities, ranging from treasure hunts, to high speed escapes, to photo challenges. A few events let you switch from boat to car to plane, like a triathlon as imagined by a drunk Elon Musk. It’s a shame this gimmick isn’t used more often in the game.
At high speed, the graphics look great. Slower, they’re one-dimensional. Destructible scenery makes your racing escapades more fantasy than fact. Even driving a car over a cliff and into the Grand Canyon will fail to dent your enthusiasm, although you know it’s not the fall that kills you… It’s the sudden stop.
