PS4 (Sony)
If you argued that this 14-year-old game was rebooted for cynical reasons – namely, a tie-in with a Ratchet and Clank movie – you’d probably be right. But after few minutes in the company of the wise-cracking space bunny and his robotic sidekick, Clank, and the dollar signs disappear from sight.
This is a colourful platform adventure. A Pixar game you can play. A nutty sci-fi that proves video games can do comedy as well as high-octane action. As with previous R&C releases, the weaponry is a highlight. There are grenade launchers, flamethrowers, and Ratchet’s spinning spanners. Top of the military pops is the Pixeltor – a shotgun that reduces enemies to pixelated particles, complete with 1980s’ retro screams.
Hop over platforms, clear areas of blobby alien enemies, and smash boxes for credits and upgrades. Clank’s puzzle-solving levels are the only parts of that show signs of rust.
