Darker than bog water
The ghost of Resident Evil is summoned in this gripping survival horror. Not surprising, since the game’s creator Shinji Mikami birthed the Resident series in 1996. Detective Sebastian Castellanos is called to investigate a crime scene at an asylum, at which point all hell breaks loose. A hoodie-wearing J-horror weirdo messes with your brain and crater-faced cretins appear as you tip-toe through tunnels, villages, and grisly sanatoriums.
Mikami ramps up the tension with creepy music, sound effects, and gore. Ammunition is in scarce supply although a customisable crossbow makes fighting fun. Alternatively, use stealth to wipe out gurning maniacs or matches to light up fallen foes and puddles of oil.
With its stone-washed graphics and box-headed enemies, Evil Within feels like a love letter to the seminal Resident Evil IV (the last game before the series went shit).
Evil Within is as bone chilling as a well-preserved cadaver.
