Ahead of the Jameson Connects - The Spirit of Christmas online gig on Wednesday night, The Scratch have spoken exclusively to Hot Press, in an interview that is full of good humour and camaraderie.
The Scratch have spoken about the impact of coronavirus, ahead of their special appearance at the Jameson Connects – The Spirit of Christmas online gig, on Wednesday.
In an interview broadcast on the Hot Press YouTube channel, members of The Scratch – whose recently released debut album Couldn’t Give a Rats was voted No.9 Album of the Year by Hot Press, in the Hot Press Annual (buy here) – speak about the meaning of the word ‘craic'.
“You can really see in the interview the extent to which the four guys are a proper unit,” Hot Press editor Niall Stokes says. “One of the great things about watching The Scratch live is the spirit and the camaraderie that exists between the band members. They clearly love what they’re doing. And they love doing it together. That spirit comes through in the interview, when they explain ‘craic’ as being what they have when the organise to do things together. It is a lovely perspective on what it is like – or can be like – being in a band."
“We’re all practising the approach of going on instinct,” Lango told Hot Press in an earlier interview. "In the past we’d never have done that – we’d have every inch of the album worked out. But the whole ethos of this band is to just go with the flow and not overthink anything.”
“If you plan too much, you can strangle yourself creatively,” his fellow Scratch-er Jordan added at the time.
That’s the over-riding spirit still, as the band look back over what has been a momentous year, that saw them release an acclaimed album – but not be in a position to do any gigs to support it. Well, tomorrow night will change that, as they perform as part of the Jameson Connects online musical experience, alongside James Vincent McMorrow and Saint Sister & Lisa Hannigan.
