The highly-anticipated track – which drops at 6pm this evening – was written, performed and produced by Harris himself.
Following the widespread success of his production efforts with the likes of Malaki, Lucy McWilliams, Nealo, Jeorge II and Gemma Bradley, Irish indie artist Matthew Harris has stepped into the spotlight on his own. His introspective new single, 'A Difficult Winter', is reminiscent of Bon Iver and James Blake. That said, it also stunningly reflects Harris' own unique style and soulful vocal.
'A Difficult Winter' marks a new era for Harris. Gone are his bossanova-inspired R&B beats, traded in for an immersive soundscape of melancholy guitar and bass. Harris' first-rate voice take centre stage, reflecting on the year and the challenges it brought.
“The song was written in a day, and I knew it was something I wanted to record and finish quickly," Harris explains. "I lost my mother to cancer earlier this year and I found Christmas under Covid to be incredibly hard – a lot of the lyrics definitely came out of that sense of loss and isolation.”
