Rooney Mara is haunted by the white-sheeted ghost of Casey Affleck.
A24 released the first trailer for the forthcoming fantasy drama A Ghost Story. The movie tells the story of a widow (Rooney Mara) whose recently deceased husband (Casey Affleck) comes back to their former common home after he died in a car crash. To look after her, his restless spirit manifests in the form of a simple ghost in a bed sheet.
The clip shows the grieving character of Rooney Mara, trying to deal with the tragedy of her husband’s death, and him coming back as the ghost, trying to reconnect with his loved one.
To make the spirit appear in a white sheet is a brave idea. But who thought the idea of an old-fashioned, white-sheeted ghost would create an absurd or even silly picture is proved wrong by the trailer. It doesn’t seem funny at all. When Casey Affleck wanders around in the house to look for his wife, it’s almost poetic.
A Ghost Story, which was directed by David Lowery, already premiered at the Sundance Festival on January 22, 2017. It was highly acclaimed by critics and was quickly acquired by the indie film studio A24, previous to the festival.
It’s not the first time for Lowery, Mara and Affleck to work together: The trio already collaborated on the 2013 crime drama Ain’t Them Bodies Saints.

Aside from Rooney Mara, who lately played in Song to Song, and Casey Affleck, who won an Oscar for his role in Manchester by the Sea, the movie also stars Will Oldham, Sonia Acevedo, Rob Zabrecky and Liz Franke.
“We build our legacy piece by piece. And maybe the whole world will remember you, or maybe just a couple of people, but you do what you can to make sure you’re still around after you’re gone,” Oldham says in the trailer.
A Ghost Story is set to be released on July 7, 2017 in US cinemas. When the film will kick off worldwide has to be announced yet.
